Kingman National Historic Register: Mohave Union High School gymnasium

The gymnasium of the Mojave Union High School was built in 1936.  It served the high school until the high school closed in 1994 and the gymnasium became the home of the Boys and Girls Club.  The high school closed as the new Kingman High School was built on Banks.  White Cliffs Middle School moved into the old high school and still used the gym.  Before closing, in 1986, the gymnasium had been added to the National Register of Historic Places.  The gym has a very unusual roof.  It is lamella, which is an unusual manner for building for a roof.  It is a criss crossing pattern of arches.  Only one other gymnasium in Arizona used this method, Phoenix Union High School.  However this gym has been demolished.

A second unusual thing about this gymnasium is the use of buttresses.  It is the only building in Kingman to do so.

Lee Williams High School opened 2012 on the site of the original Kingman High School.  However the new school included a new gym, and the old gym continues as the Boys and Girls Club.

I was able to get a picture of the ceiling 11/4/2022 as the door was open.  It is unique.
