Native American Biography: Wilma Mankiller, Cherokee

 Wilma Mankiller was the first woman to be elec ted as principle chief of the Cherokee.  She was an activist and social worker.  She advocated for improved education, healthcare and housing services.  The Cherokee Nation population more than doubled in population during her ten years as chief, from 68,000 to 170,000.  She was awarded the congressional medal of freedom.  Her biography: Mankiller: A Chief and her People was published in 1993.
